"9/10 - Dow is a talent. There is nothing, not a chord or note that you won't really really love." - Americana UK
Winnipeg, MB - Folk musician Carly Dow is proud of her Manitoban roots and the abundant music community around her, so she included those local resources on her sophomore full-length album, Comet, set for release on Friday, October 19th. The recording process and album development - everything from the musicians, to mixing and mastering, to artwork and graphic design - was created with a fantastic crew of women and men entirely from Manitoba.
The first single 'Sunlight Remembers' which premiered yesterday on The Spill Magazine, was written at her home near Riding Mountain National Park and conveys her love of the surrounding landscape. Carly will be touring this fall in support of the new album, starting with a release show in Winnipeg on October 19th. See below for a complete listing of tour dates.
Carly Dow has been sharing her style of wildcrafted folk music across Canada since 2013. With roots in Manitoba’s music community and professional training as an environmental scientist, she knows how to look closely and transform what she’s seen into intimate musical snapshots. Her 2015 debut album Ingrained rose into the national top 10 charts in the folk/roots/blues category and garnered international acclaim. Her clear, vivid imagery and enchanting melodies earned her a place on renowned festival stages across Canada including the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Guelph Ontario’s Hillside Festival, and the Bella Coola Festival in British Columbia, and propelled her international tours to Europe and the United Kingdom in 2017.
On her new album Comet, Carly demonstrates the steady growth of her craftsmanship with a full band behind her. The album features her characteristic clawhammer banjo and supports her melodies with electric guitars, strings, accordions and a driving rhythm section. They're perfectly arranged to showcase the power of her voice. With songs for adventurers, lovers, and the worlds they inhabit Comet is proof again that Carly Dow is sketching the human condition in song and claiming her own place on the musical landscape in the process. With the first single 'Sunlight Remembers', Carly paints a picture with her lyrical imagery, inviting the listener into her world.
“'Sunlight Remembers' was inspired by a visit at my house with someone very dear to me,” says Carly. "One particular line 'the birds in my house are still there when you leave’ spurred the entire song. We were having breakfast together on a nice, sunny morning, and opened the garden doors that look out onto the surrounding hills and forest. The barn swallows that were nesting on my house apparently took this as an invitation to come inside, and before I knew it, I had two birds flitting around my house and hanging out on ceiling fans. It was undeniably charming, and felt a little like we were in a Disney movie with these cute little creatures joining us for breakfast. The magic of it all, initially inspired the song and pushed me to dive deeper into my emotions surrounding that person in my life."
Comet will be available on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services on Friday, October 19th and is available for pre-order now on iTunes. For more information and the most up to date tour listings, please visit: carlydowmusic.com
