THE TRAVELLING GOODTIME MEDICINE SHOW
HOME ROUTES CELEBRATES 15th ANNIVERSARY
- MUSIC IS MEDICINE -

THE STORY

In August 1980, Winnipeg Folk Festival founders Mitch Podolak and Ava Kobrinsky produced a tour across Alberta called The Travelling Goodtime Medicine Show. The tour was a school bus full of now legendary musicians - Sylvia Tyson, Stan Rogers, Connie Kaldor and Jim Post - travelling from town to town, bringing one-day mini-festivals to each of these communities. This tour was an important catalyst for the founding of The Calgary and Edmonton Folk Festivals, also laying the theoretical framework for an organization that would begin to take shape 25 years later: Home Routes.

To celebrate their 15th anniversary, Home Routes is rekindling the name from those legendary concerts that laid the foundation for Canada’s folk music institutions, and creating a new concert series, unlocking new artistic expressions and creative collaborations. The 2022 version of the Travelling Goodtime Medicine Show is a series of 5 streaming concerts from premier music venues, available to everyone, everywhere. What could be more folk than that?

HOUSE CONCERT HOSTS
Home Routes is beginning the process of re-building its house concert touring network. If you or someone you know would like to host house concerts, please email Home Routes: info@homeroutes.ca.

THE HISTORY

Home Routes President, podcast host, and founding member of the D-Rangers Jaxon Haldane has much to say about the legacy of the dynamic partnership that was Ava Kobrinsky and Mitch Podolak:  “It will endure long into the future. They birthed venues, institutions, and festivals whose influence ripple out through the cultural fabric of our country. The West End Cultural Centre, the Winnipeg Folk Fest remain as tangible reminders of this work. The World Next Door festival will live perpetually in vivid memory for the privileged few in attendance. But one could argue that the most profound aspect of the Podolak/Kobrinski legacy is likely the least well-known of their endeavors.

Home Routes began as many of the great Kobrinski/Podolak born institutions did, as a flight of fancy in Mitch’s head.  He saw a new frontier for performance, a way for an untapped resource to be found by musicians.  And he saw regions In rural Canada that were underserved by conventional touring routes, where audiences were hungry for live music. Folk Music is a guerilla enterprise, we can pull it off in an elevator, so it makes sense that it could also be presented in living rooms. Nearly fifteen years later and thousands of shows, meals, jokes, songs, drinks and stories shared between hosts, friends and performers, we have the hindsight to see the profound community impact Home Routes has had on communities and musicians across the country.”

From 2007 to 2019 Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous ran a network of house concerts in 200+ rural communities across Canada, hosted by community volunteers who spread the word throughout the community. The program grew to 11 routes operating 6 times annually, each with 12 hosts. That’s 66 touring artists a year and 800 concerts nationwide. Since Home Routes launched its house concert touring network in 2007, the organization has produced over 10,000 shows in over 1,500 locations to over 210,000 fans, generating over $4 million in artist revenue.

THE FUTURE

What does the future look like for Home Routes?

Executive Director Leonard Podolak explores, “The underlying role of any performer is to bring the audience into their world, and break down the fourth wall, and truly create magic, where the reality of the outside world goes away. Home Routes transcends many realities of music business norms.

In the last two years, with so many tours being cancelled, a major shift has occurred. We have presented a diverse array of folk music online:  The Home Routes Online Folk Festival, our series of Zoom shows, as well as special projects as Play It Forward, Prairie Panorama, and The Winnipeg Crankie Festival.

I’m so excited for our traditional house concert tours, to be enhanced by our new digital awareness, and to see the two programs work side by side in concert, supporting each other. These endeavors will enable the organization to connect more community stakeholders in our tours, and allow more local participation in public spaces.”

Prairie Panorama connected visual artists and musicians for unique collaborations. The Crankie Festival puts those collaborations (and a whole lot more) on stages across Winnipeg each fall. And streaming concerts appear here to stay, presenting new opportunities for Home Routes to reach communities and music lovers in every nook and cranny of this big, beautiful country for years to come.

Calgary Indie Rockers Emblematics Announce New EP

1st SINGLE ‘FESTIVAL DOOR’ OUT NOW!

STREAM/SHARE HERE

Emblematics · Festival Door

Many musicians have increased their creative output during the pandemic, but Calgary indie rock group Emblematics are taking it to a whole other level. The group released their Wavelength EP in late 2020 and now they’re getting ready to launch their 2nd pandemic EP Navigatioan on April 22nd.

The first single from the EP, ‘Festival Door’, is a haunting shoegazey track that leans heavily into the band’s British Rock influences while serving up a swirling synth-driven blend of post-rock chamber pop.

"'Festival Door' is a slightly weird dream pop dance track," says vocalist/guitarist Michael Yun. "The song is built around a straight ahead rock beat and funk bass line, but is also accentuated by several synth parts and vocal harmonies. The majority of the lyrics discuss dealing with a daily, pointless pursuit which contrasts somewhat with the upbeat tempo of the song.”

Formed during their university days, Emblematics began as an educational distraction that eventually evolved into a full-blown musical experiment—a deep foray into swooning art rock. Emblematics’ music has been described as “British influenced, post-rock chamber pop,” dominated by atmospheric synths, crashing piano chords and jangly Telecaster riffs. The band’s songs reflect a unique blend of their influences, artists such as Radiohead, Blur, Grizzly Bear, and Joy Division. During the past decade, Emblematics have created a lengthy body of work; every new recording building and expanding on the sonic foundation of the previous one.

'Festival Door' is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more info, please visit emblematicsband.com.

Little Miss Higgins Announces New Album + Podcast

PODCAST LAUNCHES FEB 14th
+ ALBUM IS OUT ON MARCH 14th

STREAM/SHARE 1st SINGLE
HERE

Little Miss Higgins · Three Days on a Page

Judging by her ambitious output, award-winning musician and songwriter Little Miss Higgins has kept busy during the pandemic. Her new, multifaceted project, The Fire Waltz, is both a five-part miniseries podcast and a full-length album. The first single 'Three Days On A Page' is out now. Listen here.

Inspired by stories of her great-grandmother, Eva Bersay, Higgins has created a one of a kind audio experience—a riveting tale of an extraordinary woman. The Fire Waltz follows Eva on her journey to Canada from Jersey Island, off the northern coast of France, during the early 1900s, depicting the power and perils of love, the realities of a world at war and the uncertainties of the aftershocks. Using old photos, postcards, letters, a travel journal and stories gathered from family, the music-driven project took shape in October 2019. Higgins and her two main collaborators, Kris Demeanor and Eric Rose, began by telling the story through song titles. After that, eighteen songs were written in 12 days.

Initially, it was intended for theatre, but when live entertainment changed due to the global pandemic, Higgins switched the approach to be completely auditive. She wanted to link the songs with narrative, drawing on ideas of old radio plays. Script was written, more artists were gathered and even more songs were created. Working both in studio and remotely, Higgins and her extremely talented team from across Western Canada recorded the music and the script. Then she sound-designed the entire piece while recording engineer, Jamie Sitar, put everything together. Thus, Season 1 of The Fire Waltz has come to fruition.

A travel journal from Little Miss Higgins’ family inspired the first single ‘Three Days On A Page’.

"This song specifically follows my great-grandmother riding an immigrant train called the Galloping Goose across Canada," says Little Miss Higgins. "One of my collaborators, Kris Demeanor, took the lead on the lyrics of this one and does the intro. Then, I take over the main vocals in the recording, backed by some of Manitoba’s finest musicians: Gilles Fournier on bass, Joanna Miller on drums and Darwin Baker on harmonica."

The first episode of the podcast will be released on February 14th with weekly episodes until the final chapter on March 14th to coincide with The Fire Waltz album release day.

'Three Days On A Page' is available now on Bandcamp and through the website: littlemisshiggins.com

Toronto Indie Rock Duo Soft Set Release New Single + Video MORE MORE MORE

Download High-Res Photos | Photo Credit: Heidi Athay

WATCH/SHARE VIDEO HERE

Toronto dream pop/indie rock duo Soft Set are back with a brand new single and video 'More More More', out now on all digital streaming platforms. Watch video here.

'More More More' is the first single from Soft Set's new album Still Life set for release this summer. The bright, melancholic track features Mark Crozer (The Jesus and Mary Chain) on bass and was mastered by Simon Scott (Slowdive) at SPS Mastering studio in the UK.

"'More More More' is about loneliness and how people generally cope and sometimes never find happiness," says vocalist Nathan Athay. "Most of the time, life doesn’t have Hollywood endings and you should cherish what you have and not waste precious time looking for things you don’t.”

The origin story for Soft Set begins with James Gray and Nathan Athay meeting for the first time in high school in Barrie, Ontario. It didn’t take long in their friendship for them to realize that they had a lot in common, especially when it came to their taste in music. Drawing on influences from iconic artists that have inspired them on their musical path—The Stone Roses, The Smiths, My Bloody Valentine, RIDE, Slowdive, Happy Mondays, The Boo Radleys, Mercury Rev—Soft Set’s music has something for everyone!

Soft Set released their debut EP Love and Dancing in 2020. RIDE’s Mark Gardener mixed the EP at his studio in Oxfordshire, UK (OX4 Sound). Their debut full-length Still Life, which is mixed by Shae Brossard (Arcade Fire, Godspeed You! Black Emperor) and mastered by Slowdive’s Simon Scott, is set for release this summer.

'More More More' is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more info, please visit softsetmusic.com.

Calgary Indie Rockers I Am The Mountain Release New Single + Video

Download High-Res Photo | Photo Credit: Annie da Silva

WATCH/SHARE VIDEO HERE

Canadian indie rockers I Am The Mountain are kicking off 2022 with a brand new single and video ‘Overthinking Conversations’ out now on all digital streaming platforms. Watch video here.

'Overthinking Conversations' is an epic slow burn track that addresses the power of community when feeling alone and stuck in your head.

“'Overthinking Conversations' speaks to the uncontrollable automatic process that clouds our minds on a daily occurrence," says vocalist Colton O'Reilly. "The song is a deep dive into the concept of getting stuck in your own head while over-analyzing social situations, and the difficulties of being yourself, even with your own friends. If you’ve ever been caught up in your own thoughts, just know your friends still accept and care about you because they’re probably overthinking everything, too. The full version of the song has three movements, beginning with a softer emotional ballad, to the heavier rock and lyrical section, finishing with a full orchestral reprise.”

Clocking in at just over 8 minutes, ‘Overthinking Conversations’ is not your typical indie rock song. And although the band have also released a radio edit version of the song, they used the full version for the video.

Says Colton: “The videographer who worked on our music video is Finn Westbury, who is a professional sponsored snowboarder, and has filmed many snowboard and skateboarding films for his company SRD Productions. Our music video combines the two worlds of short film and skateboarding videos into an emotional story of heartbreak and rediscovering yourself.”

'Overthinking Conversations' is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more info, please visit: iamthemountain.ca.
