Calgary Instrumental Pop Duo Ginger Beef Release Debut Album

WATCH/SHARE VIDEO FOR
2ND SINGLE 'DEW'
HERE

Calgary instrumental pop duo Ginger Beef share their self-titled debut album out now on all digital streaming platforms. Listen here.

To celebrate the album release, the duo is also premiering the video for their 2nd single 'Dew', which follows the release of first single 'Hocus Pocus'. A glossy retro-influenced track, 'Dew' is full of breezy positive vibes and even features a few lyrics… in Mandarin.

“We grew up in the 80s/90s and wanted to make an unabashedly retro track to capture some fond feelings from those times," says MSG (aka Warren Tse). "It’s easy to sing along to because the name of the song also conveniently doubles as the lyrics. And if you listen carefully, you might hear a coded message in there too.”

Like the beloved namesake dish, Ginger Beef is homegrown in Calgary but influenced by Asian flavours. Their origin story begins in 2021 when flutist Jiajia Li was asked to present a music video for the Camp Sled Island event in Calgary. She ended up collaborating with the veteran multi-instrumentalist / producer / Calgary Flames organist conveniently living under her roof (sheʼs married to MSG) to cook up ‘Flashback‘, an energetic track seasoned with anachronistic synths, slap bass, and traditional Chinese elements — and no singing. Unexpectedly, this one-off only whet the crowd’s appetite for more, and Ginger Beef was born.

So how do you resurrect a long-extinct genre like instrumental pop in 2023? Ginger Beefʼs answer is to splice together DNA from other genres. “Weʼre unabashedly pop, but being jazz adjacent gives us access to a much broader palette,” says MSG and cites acts like The Police and Steely Dan as examples of jazzers who slummed their way to mainstream success.

While MSG brings rock and jazz-adjacent sensibilities to the table, Li virtuosically fronts the project with breathtaking musical athleticism and beauty, courtesy of her extensive classical training (she has a master's degree in flute performance), and digs deep into memories of growing up with musical parents in Beijing. The result of this musical partnership is instrumental music that refuses to fade into the background.

Ginger Beef's self-titled debut album is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more information, please visit gingerbeefband.com.

'THIS LIFE' OUT NOW
WATCH/SHARE VIDEO
HERE

Regina musician Michael Harmel debuts his solo singer-songwriter project, Dearest Henry, with a new single and video 'This Life' out now on all digital streaming platforms. Listen here.

The name Dearest Henry is an homage to Michael's grandad, who was also a musician, and used to play music for him at a young age. This inspired Michael to explore all types of musical genres and ultimately led to him learning to play the guitar.

The debut single 'This Life' is a personal account of loved ones lost. After the passing of his father in 2021, Michael felt it was the right song to release as his first Dearest Henry single.

"After losing my father I took some time away from music to reflect and focus on family," said Michael. "As I find music can be healing it was important for me to return to songwriting and the creative process. I hope that sharing some of my more personal songs such as 'This Life' will resonate with others who have also experienced loss."

Having written over 200 songs, Michael has extensive experience and talent for songwriting, and many of his songs have been recorded for commercial release. Michael is also the main songwriter and lead vocalist of the band, Government Town.

Along with releasing new music under Dearest Henry, Michael also has a growing catalogue of songs to offer artists and creative producers. Michael also regularly collaborates with other musicians to write and record songs.

'This Life' is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more information, please visit dearesthenrymusic.ca.

'Elf-Man' is the 2nd single from Los Duendes' debut album Me Recuerdas set for release on November 17th. It’s a cinematic Cumbia with a descarga inspired by 70s Salsa.With this track, the group highlights the correlation between old spaghetti western soundtracks, 60s surf-guitar and psychedelic Cumbia from the Amazon.

"This song was composed to fuse the genres of Cumbia, Spaghetti Western, and cinematic music," says guitarist Seb Chamney. "The chord progression of D minor to A flat major is what gives the song its unique harmonic flavour."

Vocalist Sangito Bigelow adds: “Imagine a desolate Sonoran desert scape - the sky turns electric pink as the sun sets on cracked red earth. Snakes, lizards, and beetles welcome the arrival of nightfall, a reprieve from the day’s blistering heat. In the distance, a lone figure on horseback trudges slowly across the horizon. He’s a cowboy… but he’s not entirely human.”

Calgary Musician Arturo Marc Releases New LUZ EP

STREAM/SHARE TITLE TRACK HERE

Calgary musician Arturo Marc shares his debut EP LUZ out now on all digital streaming platforms. Listen here.

To mark the occasion, Arturo is also releasing the title track 'Luz' as the 2nd single. Produced by Juno Nominee Luis 'El Pana' Tovar, the song features Latin Grammy Award winner Jorge Glem on the Venezuelan Cuatro. A fusion of tambora and reggae, the song's vibes feel like a tropical love story.

"'Luz' is a confession that talks about love and connecting to the idea of a perfect universe that lives inside all of us,' says Arturo. "It's a song about the blend of self-love and romantic love that came to me on a meditation when I was clearly paying to much attention to my thoughts."

Arturo is a Venezuelan-Canadian composer and his debut EP is an homage to his Latin roots. LUZ features a unique blend of traditional Venezuelan rhythms like tambora and Venezuelan calypso, with reggae and ska, filled with Spanish lyrics that emphasize a recurring theme on Light (Luz in Spanish) as a metaphor for love, friendship, resiliency and beauty.

LUZ was produced by Juno nominee Luis 'El Pana' Tovar and recorded at the iconic Calgary Studio Bell. The EP features Latin Grammy Award winners in the Venezuelan Cuatro, Hector Molina and Jorge Glem, and Latin Grammy Award winning audio engineer Jean Sanchez for singles 'Luz' and ‘Nuestro Universo'.

Canadian Folk Icon Connie Kaldor Releases New Album KEEP GOING

WATCH/SHARE VIDEO FOR 2nd SINGLE
'NOT A SENTIMENTAL SONG'
HERE

Celebrating 45 years in folk music, award-winning Canadian folk icon Connie Kaldor channels a wisdom that comes from experience on her latest release Keep Going out now on all digital streaming platforms. Listen here.

Also out now is the video for the 2nd single 'Not a Sentimental Song', a sweet and introspective anniversary song celebrating love that endures decades.

"There is something like alchemy that happens for me when I take a song that I've written on a guitar with a simple picking pattern that has a somewhat dreamy quality to it," says Connie. "And then you play it with others and somehow they capture that soundtrack dreaminess and suddenly those folk guitar patterns are floating above a percussion track. I love it when ordinary is surpassed. When what is expected is not what is needed. It is wonderful to see these young players with all their skills and influences carry those folk musical intensions so carefully, adding their harmonies and sounds and hear it captured perfectly. There is almost a visual quality to this track. It was a thrill to hear it unfold as we recorded it."

At 70, Connie’s latest album is a milestone in her long career. The prairie artist once again attests to her depth as a songwriter, showing she can tackle any story out there and will, with songs that will stop you in your tracks. From the first song, the album's title track, 'Keep Going' serves as an anthem of perseverance and resilience, inspiring listeners to remain steadfast in the face of hardship. Her songs 'Sad is Your Passing' and 'Without You' take on grief and loss with the grace and beauty that you would expect of a songwriter of her calibre.

This latest release reminds listeners that her music has always drawn attention to the experiences of women, often by employing humour to disarm an audience. Among her earliest successes, her song, 'Jerks' mocked the jeers and catcalls from men that all women have experienced (and this, back when folk festivals would reject female songwriters with a, “sorry, we already have our women’s act this year”). Today, Connie again shows her lifelong commitment against gender inequities with 'Woman Who Pays' written to commemorate a friend of her daughter-in-law, who was one of the eight women murdered in eight weeks in Montreal during the pandemic. The track calls attention to increasing rates of gender-based violence as Connie sings: “What is domestic about assault?”

Keep Going was recorded at Studio King in Montreal. Connie worked with Paul Campagne, her producer and co-producer of her children—Gabriel Campagne (voice) and Aleksi Campagne (voice and violin)—who also appear on the album. Keep Going features multiple Maple Blues Award Winner Suzie Vinnick and acclaimed uilleann pipe player Steáfán Hannigan.

Keep Going is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. Connie will play Canadian tour dates to support the new album, starting on October 26th in Spruce Grove, AB. See below for the full tour schedule. For more information, please visit conniekaldor.com.
