The 2nd single from Steve Maddock's new album Jack Of All Trades, 'A Special Kind Of Love' follows the release of the lead single 'Holy Man', which came out late last year. Set for release on February 16th, Jack Of All Trades is a joint venture between Steve and Mike Reveley. Mike is a former Vancouver jazz arranger/composer who founded the Capilano University Jazz Studies Program where Steve studied. 

A soulful ballad that deals with the real meaning of love, 'A Special Kind Of Love' pulls at the heartstrings as hints of jazz and blues shine through.

"The song is about a young man talking with his father about his new girlfriend," says 'A Special Kind Of Love' songwriter Mike Reveley. "The older man tries to tell him what real love is all about, but he doesn’t quite understand. He feels that he already knows what love is. As he ages, he comes to understand what his father was talking about: 'that special kind of love'."

Over the past two decades, Steve Maddock has been steadily establishing himself as one of Canada’s most versatile vocal talents. Whether sharing a concert stage with a 65-piece symphony orchestra, performing with a 10-piece show band on a cruise ship, or fronting a jazz trio in a local club, he’s able to change gears effortlessly and present the music in a way that’s honest and fresh. Steve’s first love is jazz, but he is equally at home with blues, pop and musicals.

Steve is currently on the Jazz Faculty of Capilano University where he has taught private voice, vocal jazz masterclass, studio performance, vocal improvisation and ear training. He works as an adjudicator and clinician at many different Canadian music festivals.

'Holy Man' is the first single from Steve Maddock's new album Jack Of All Trades, which is set for release on February 16th. The album is a joint venture between Steve and Mike Reveley. Mike is a former Vancouver jazz arranger/composer who founded the Capilano University Jazz Studies Program where Steve studied. 

A rocking shuffle with an 8-piece band and a great solo by Vancouver jazz guitarist Bill Coon, 'Holy Man' is a song about a man seeking redemption with the help of a strong woman. 

"We have all, at one time or another, experienced situations where we need support to overcome personal problems," says 'Holy Man' songwriter Mike Reveley. "All too often these problems are drug and alcohol related. We all know someone who is struggling with an addiction."

Vancouver Latin Fusion Group Los Duendes Release Debut Album ME RECUERDAS

To celebrate the album release, Los Duendes are also releasing the title track as the 3rd single following the release of previous singles 'Coleslaw' and 'Elf-Man'. The upbeat and alluring track is an emotive journey through the pain of heartbreak.

"'Me Recuerdas' was composed during a late-night session in the studio and takes listeners on an emotional ride through the nightmare of being broken up with and having to move on," says vocalist Sangito Bigelow. "The track is a sultry arrangement of horn lines reminiscent of late-night traffic along rain-slicked city streets and features the distinctive sound of the Tres cubano, along with vocals from Toto Berriel and Dawn Pemberton, funk Timba bass lines, and Latin percussion. It's an epic saga that serves as a cautionary tale to all the Don Juan’s out there and encourages the broken-hearted to move on, ultimately having the last laugh."

Los Duendes' new album Me Recuerdas is an exploration of Latin American music through the influences of jazz, funk, fusion, metal and house. Latin electrified guitar with heavy Afro-Latin percussion and gang vocals in the style of a typical cumbia or salsa combo are central to the sound. Drawing inspiration from the vintage guitar tones of cumbia and chicha, this album features heavy electric guitar, evocative of the jarring frenetic sounds of the urban jungle.

Me Recuerdas means 'remember me' and the themes of loss and grief can be felt throughout the album. It can also be interpreted in a romantic way, like in the title track that speaks to an ended love affair.

“The music on this record is a personal fusion of the music I love and the interests of the musicians in the band," says Sangito. "Our lead guitarist and drummer both come from a jazz background and add a strong element of groove and virtuosic improvisation. In addition to our many diverse genres and influences, I also hear a strong correlation between the sounds of cumbia, Spaghetti Western soundtracks, surfer punk and African high-life music on this album. We have been playing together as a band for the past 6 years and have developed a singular voice as an ensemble. With this album, we are looking to develop our sound further and take our music to the next level."

Calgary Instrumental Pop Duo Ginger Beef Release Debut Album

To celebrate the album release, the duo is also premiering the video for their 2nd single 'Dew', which follows the release of first single 'Hocus Pocus'. A glossy retro-influenced track, 'Dew' is full of breezy positive vibes and even features a few lyrics… in Mandarin. 

“We grew up in the 80s/90s and wanted to make an unabashedly retro track to capture some fond feelings from those times," says MSG (aka Warren Tse). "It’s easy to sing along to because the name of the song also conveniently doubles as the lyrics. And if you listen carefully, you might hear a coded message in there too.”

Like the beloved namesake dish, Ginger Beef is homegrown in Calgary but influenced by Asian flavours. Their origin story begins in 2021 when flutist Jiajia Li was asked to present a music video for the Camp Sled Island event in Calgary. She ended up collaborating with the veteran multi-instrumentalist / producer / Calgary Flames organist conveniently living under her roof (sheʼs married to MSG) to cook up ‘Flashback‘, an energetic track seasoned with anachronistic synths, slap bass, and traditional Chinese elements — and no singing. Unexpectedly, this one-off only whet the crowd’s appetite for more, and Ginger Beef was born. 

So how do you resurrect a long-extinct genre like instrumental pop in 2023? Ginger Beefʼs answer is to splice together DNA from other genres. “Weʼre unabashedly pop, but being jazz adjacent gives us access to a much broader palette,” says MSG and cites acts like The Police and Steely Dan as examples of jazzers who slummed their way to mainstream success.  

While MSG brings rock and jazz-adjacent sensibilities to the table, Li virtuosically fronts the project with breathtaking musical athleticism and beauty, courtesy of her extensive classical training (she has a master's degree in flute performance), and digs deep into memories of growing up with musical parents in Beijing. The result of this musical partnership is instrumental music that refuses to fade into the background.

Regina Musician Michael Harmel Debuts New Solo Project With Single/Video

Regina musician Michael Harmel debuts his solo singer-songwriter project, Dearest Henry, with a new single and video 'This Life' out now on all digital streaming platforms. Listen here.

The name Dearest Henry is an homage to Michael's grandad, who was also a musician, and used to play music for him at a young age. This inspired Michael to explore all types of musical genres and ultimately led to him learning to play the guitar.

The debut single 'This Life' is a personal account of loved ones lost. After the passing of his father in 2021, Michael felt it was the right song to release as his first Dearest Henry single.

"After losing my father I took some time away from music to reflect and focus on family," said Michael. "As I find music can be healing it was important for me to return to songwriting and the creative process. I hope that sharing some of my more personal songs such as 'This Life' will resonate with others who have also experienced loss."

Having written over 200 songs, Michael has extensive experience and talent for songwriting, and many of his songs have been recorded for commercial release. Michael is also the main songwriter and lead vocalist of the band, Government Town. 

Along with releasing new music under Dearest Henry, Michael also has a growing catalogue of songs to offer artists and creative producers. Michael also regularly collaborates with other musicians to write and record songs.
