Vancouver-based symphonic funk rock collective The Living Orchestra share their bold new single, “Animal Party,” the first release from their forthcoming album Last Generation – an ambitious climate crisis rock opera set to arrive May 17, 2026.
Blending orchestral grandeur with funk-driven grooves and rock intensity, “Animal Party” offers a vivid first glimpse into the expansive world of Last Generation. The track is both playful and pointed, delivering an imaginative post-apocalyptic vision from an unexpected perspective.
“This song is a cheeky fantasy of how animal life would flourish in a post-apocalyptic world,” says singer, songwriter, and bandleader Mike Bell. “In our rock opera, it’s set in 2040, where half of humans have wiped themselves out through climate-related disasters and the ensuing fallout—wars over dwindling resources and super pandemics from fatal diseases spreading north through warmer weather. It’s sung from the animals’ point of view, who are forgiving humans and inviting them to reconnect, unite, and regenerate the world together through ‘rewilding’: restoring ecosystems and biodiversity to mitigate climate change.”
“Animal Party” captures the spirit of Last Generation – a sweeping, multi-perspective narrative told across past, present, and future timelines, where lush orchestration meets urgent, genre-blurring songwriting.
Produced by JUNO Award-winning and GRAMMY-nominated producer Garth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers), Last Generation was recorded between 2024 and 2025 at The Farm Studios on BC's Sunshine Coast and Vancouver’s Hipposonic Studios. The album features an expansive lineup, including Vancouver’s Black Dog String Quartet, a brass quartet, a funk rock trio, and a full choir, bringing The Living Orchestra’s cinematic vision to life.
Formed from the ashes of Vancouver symphonic rock group The Living, The Living Orchestra marks a fresh evolution for the band. Originally meeting at UBC’s School of Music, the group is now comprised of some of Vancouver’s most accomplished musicians, with credits alongside artists including Sting, Kanye West, Mariah Carey, Rod Stewart, Michael Bublé, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, 54-40, and Marianas Trench.
While Last Generation is the band’s fifth full-length release overall, it marks their first as The Living Orchestra, featuring all six original members alongside eight additional instrumentalists and vocalists, creating a powerful 13-piece ensemble.
In a distinctive and unconventional release approach, Last Generation will first be available exclusively as a physical and digital album on May 17, 2026, coinciding with a full-scale live premiere at Vancouver’s Hollywood Theatre. The album will not initially be available on streaming platforms, inviting audiences to experience the project as a complete, immersive work before its wider digital release later in the year.
The May 17 performance will see Last Generation brought to life in its entirety as a rock opera, featuring the full band, an 18-person choir (The Mighty Chorus), projector visuals, and a programmed light show – offering a one-night-only, multidisciplinary experience that mirrors the album’s sweeping scope.
“Animal Party” is available now on Spotify, Apple Music, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more information, please visit thelivingorchestra.com.
