Forget Shark Boy, this summer the public art experience that will have everyone talking is all about salmon. UNINTERRUPTED, the outdoor cinematic spectacle that lit up Vancouver’s Cambie Bridge in the summer of 2017, is back and on the move. And because the world is much different in 2021, this time the experience is in Virtual Reality.  Not just any VR - synchronized, outdoor virtual reality for small audiences.

The site-specific work that thrilled residents and visitors alike is now swimming in 3D and touring cities throughout Metro Vancouver in VR.  Starting in July, UNINTERRUPTED will be presented at various outdoor locations. No need to own a headset - one will be provided for you. The event is designed so audiences of twenty can be immersed in the experience together, while apart. UNINTERRUPTED brings a little community connection back - safely -  to local neighbourhoods after a long year of pandemic restrictions.

UNINTERRUPTED maps the extraordinary migration of Pacific salmon on a city bridge in a unique 30-minute visual and sound experience. With visual poetry, it inspires audiences to reflect on the intersection of urban life and nature. It’s the heart of the river delivered to the heart of a city - and now in more cities than ever.

Seeing is believing. Click here to see a video clip of what you’ll find in the goggles.

UNINTERRUPTED on-location VR showings launch on July 7th - 11th outside of the Museum of Vancouver for a 5-evening run with 4 showings every evening. The production will then move to the Shipyard Commons in North Vancouver and then outdoors at the Burnaby Art Gallery.  Each audience member is fitted with a VR headset and seated in a swivel chair in order to enjoy the 360-degree experience. Seating is distanced and outdoors, and all equipment is sanitized between showings with ultraviolet light used to clean the sensitive equipment.

The event is still free but seats must be booked in advance, online booking is now open at uninterrupted.ca.

The Uninterrupted project continues to evolve through the creative collaboration of director Nettie Wild, producers Betsy Carson and Rae Hull, editor Michael Brockington and a diverse team of artists and media specialists. A committed network of sponsors has made the summer tour possible and helped to ensure the event remains free to the public.

More locations and dates will be announced throughout the summer. Sign-up at uninterrupted.ca for the most up-to-date information.

“We’re excited to bring our jazz music fans a combination of online and live performances featuring local musicians and musicians from across BC,” said Dave Quinn, artistic director for the festival.

“When the COVID-19 pandemic forced live music events to shut down last year, the festival carried on with our first live-streamed format,” said Quinn. “Then earlier this year we moved the festival forward from July to the September long weekend due to ongoing province-wide COVID-19 restrictions. After navigating through the COVID-19 pandemic for the past year, it will come as no surprise that our theme for the 2021 festival is the power of music and how music heals.”

Music Heals Canada joins the festival as a charity partner and co-presenter of the Sunday Soul Gospel show this year. Tickets to the Soul Gospel show will be by donation to support Music Heals’ mission to raise awareness and funds for the healing power of music and the festival’s youth initiatives (Rising Star, Jazz Education Workshop and supporting up-and-coming youth performances). Music Heals is a charitable foundation that supports a wide range of music therapy services in communities in BC and across Canada.

“Music Heals is thrilled to be the charitable partner of the 2021 Odlum Brown Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival,” said Taryn Stephenson, Music Heals Director of Brand Partnerships and Sponsorships.

“Prolonged social isolation due to the pandemic has caused a major spike in mental health related issues such as depression and anxiety. But despite all odds, the world found a way to keep the music alive. From live streams, to outdoor concerts, to mobile stages on the back of pick-up trucks, musicians continued to bring people together through innovative ways. We have seen first hand how music brings people together - even while apart. And now as the world begins to open up we are looking forward to celebrating the resilient, unifying, healing power of music in person.”

Festival Title Sponsor, Odlum Brown Limited notes, “Our core values are to give back where we live and work and to be an integral part of our community, and we are very pleased to be part of the festival once again.” Paul Donaldson, Branch Manager, Director and Portfolio Manager at Odlum Brown Limited added, “With organizations like the festival, we are more connected and I can’t think of a better event to bring us all together.”

The 2021 Odlum Brown Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival will announce more additions to the festival in the upcoming weeks. Here are a few of the highlights:

ADEQUATE! · Groove (ft. Mariya Stokes)

With summer nearly here and the COVID-19 pandemic (hopefully) ending soon, Alberta power funk trio ADEQUATE! are asking the all important question: “Are you ready to Groove?!” on their new single featuring Calgary musician Mariya Stokes.

‘Groove’ is the 2nd single from ADEQUATE!’s upcoming debut, following the release of ‘Bike Shorts’ which came out on April 30th. The groovy, funked up soul track is all about shaking your butt, moving your body and losing yourself to the music, a perfect song for the current moment.

“‘Groove’ represents how we as musicians feel about performing,” says lead vocalist Keenan Pezderic. “There’s the day-to-day struggles and stress but when we perform, all that fades away and we get lost in the groove. We wrote this song with Mariya Stokes and she did such an amazing job of conveying the message in such a soulful way.”

Hailing from Lethbridge, Alberta, ADEQUATE! is sure to put a smile on your face and some dance in your pants! The trio has been slowly building their fanbase over the past few years with their fun and dynamic live shows, focused on providing an excellent musical experience through high-quality showmanship and musical skill. ADEQUATE! brings in the fundamentals that made their funk idols live shows so great, aiming to be a source of entertainment for anyone listening.

ADEQUATE!’s new single ‘Groove’ is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. Their self-titled debut album will be released on June 11th. For more information, please visit adequatefunk.com.

Vancouver Musician Babylung Announces Release of New Album

FIRST SINGLE 'BETRAYAL' OUT TODAY

HERE

The COVID-19 pandemic created roadblocks that Vancouver R&B/hip-hop musician Babylung turned into creative challenges and inspiration on his 3rd album To Live And Die In Surrey set for release on July 30th. The first single 'Betrayal', released on his new label Bayanihan Records, is out today on all digital streaming platforms along with the cinematic music video which premiered yesterday through a video premiere virtual event on YouTube and IG Live.

Maximal. Polarizing. And gut-wrenchingly beautiful. Babylung's new single 'Betrayal' is a tragic story of infidelity, told through the vivid imagery of being stabbed in the back.

"I started to notice a pattern with Gen-Z and our struggle with commitment," says Babylung. "Infidelity sadly isn’t uncommon and I noticed people in my life were dealing with deep emotional scars as a result. Relationships are almost dispensable to young people and I wanted 'Betrayal' to capture the grief it causes in its rawest form."

Babylung connected with close friend and award-winning director, Carter Kirilenko, to help tell the story of 'Betrayal' with the music video.

Babylung explains: "As forward thinkers, we wanted to portray betrayal in a new way that hasn’t been over told. Betrayal comes in many forms, so we wanted to tell the story of an artist betraying his lover for his artistic passion. Young adulthood inevitably comes with growing apart from people you love and growing closer to your true identity. As you grow into your true identity, circumstances will reveal whether your relationship still aligns, and you need to decide who to be loyal to, your relationship or your destiny."

With R&B instincts, gospel roots, and hip-hop tendencies, Babylung digs deep into the soul to create music both unequivocal and honest. His tender voice and soothing lyrics have reached over 285,000 listeners globally with over 1 million streams and has been featured on Spotify's New Music Friday (Canada/Philippines), Just Vibing, and R&B Favourites playlists. As a dynamic performer, Babylung demands the crowd's attention with his often improvised arrangements and call & response songwriting, reminiscent of the gospel music he was raised on.

Babylung's new single ‘Betrayal’ is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more info, please visit babylungmusic.com.

Autumn Studios · 04 - Bukola - I Am Enough

Vancouver musician Bukola shares her story of growing up Black in Canada and shows gratitude to her favourite Black female artists for paving the way, on her new single 'I Am Enough’ out today on all digital streaming platforms.

Following the release of 'A Good Thing' in March, 'I Am Enough' is the 2nd single from her debut EP The Chronicles of a Teenage Mind, which is set for release on June 25th. Bukola wrote the powerful, early 2000s R&B-influenced track with Vancouver musicians Tonye Aganaba, Desirée Dawson, and Anthony Anderson.

“‘I Am Enough’ was the last song written for my new EP and it was initially supposed to be a playful song about a day in my life,” says Bukola. “However, after the continuous rise of anti-Black racism, I knew I wanted to write something more poignant. The song talks about my journey growing up as a young black woman and some of my struggles. It also shows gratitude to my favourite Black female artists, who have helped me gain confidence with my skin and who ultimately taught me that I Am Enough. My hope for this song is that other young Black people can listen to it and know that they are not the only ones going through certain things and that they should be proud of their beautiful dark skin and heritage. All proceeds from this song are going to the Black Youth Helpline who work tirelessly to help Black Canadian youth with their struggles and provide them with culturally relevant advice and support. An organization like this is super important to ensure that my Black peers get to the point where they believe they are enough because they are, and so much more.”

Recently hailed by the CBC as one of the Top 10 Soulful Female Artists in the 2020 CBC Searchlight competition, Bukola blends the sounds of contemporary R&B and Jazz music to create her own soulful sound. She’s deeply influenced by artists such as India.Arie, Daniel Caesar and H.E.R., and worked with Grammy Award-winning producer, Chin Injeti, and Juno Award-winning producer Ben Kaplan on her soon to be released debut EP The Chronicles of A Teenage Mind.

Bukola's new single ‘I Am Enough’ is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more info, please visit bukolamusic.com.

PRAISE FOR 'A GOOD THING'

"Bukola is in her element here and delivers a gripping performance well beyond her age.” - Earmilk

"Fans of TLC and Lauryn Hill will appreciate the sonics Bukola plays with here, as the song itself transforms from an acoustic ballad to a 90’s era R&B throwback and back with
seamless ease.” - Rock The Pigeon
