The Long War · 06 Deeper Blue

Vancouver indie rockers The Long War are giving sad summer vibes on their latest single 'Deeper Blue' out today on all digital streaming platforms.

'Deeper Blue' is the 4th single from The Long War's sophomore album Under A Heavy Sky, which is set for release on October 22nd. Full of melancholic longing, the laid-back track delivers a hazy, dreamy feel making one yearn for summers past.

'"Deeper Blue' is about nostalgia," says vocalist Jarrett Lee. "When I came to the west coast one of the first things I did was travel to California to clear my head. In all its beauty, I felt a lot of sadness and a nagging feeling of uncertainty. The song is about the struggle to hold on while saying goodbye. It's a place and time where I learned to embrace the beauty in life, good and bad."

Formed in Vancouver in 2016, The Long War won the 2017 CBC Searchlight Contest and their song 'Breathe In Breathe Out' was listed as one of CBC Music's Top 100 songs that year. Their first album,Landscapes, debuted on CBC First Play and the band has been featured on Q with Tom Power and in the pages of Canadian Musician Magazine. They’ve toured across Canada, performing at the CBC Music Festival in Toronto, Banff Performance In The Park, the reopening of Ottawa’s National Arts Centre as part of the Canada 150 Celebrations, and Folk Alliance International in Montreal.

'Deeper Blue' is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more info, please visit thelongwarband.com.

Leeroy Stagger Releases New Single + Video DOES ANYBODY LIVE HERE?

Singer-songwriter Leeroy Stagger examines the emotional pain of a break-up on his latest single 'Does Anybody Live Here?' out today on all digital streaming platforms. Watch the video here.

‘Does Anybody Live Here?’ is the 2nd single from Leeroy Stagger’s new album Dystopian Weekends, set for release on October 1st. The song and video explore the pain of a broken heart and the loneliness and feelings of isolation that occur when a relationship ends.

“It’s been ages since I’ve felt the weight of a broken heart due to a break up,” says Leeroy. “Last year some close friends decided to break it off after a few years of a joined life together. As a writer, I’ve always been able to put myself into most others shoes and empathetically feel those feelings. That moment as it all goes down, if we are enlightened enough, it can go fairly smoothly. If we aren’t, it can be a real mess of tension and tears. This situation was no different from most breakups. Everybody can relate to a broken heart - the melancholy and pain of a separation. My job as a songwriter is to distill those feelings into a four-minute song.”

Recorded at Afterlife Studios in Vancouver at the beginning of the global pandemic, Dystopian Weekendsis the serum of truth with a slice of light and darkness that we all need right now.

"After 4 years of relentless touring, my band, The Rebeltone Sound, needed a break," says Leeroy. "I decided to go to Vancouver and put together a group of friends that I’ve always wanted to record with. I’d always wanted to work on a record with John Raham (Frazey Ford, Destroyer) and it happened that everybody was available that week. Little did we know that a global pandemic was sitting at our doorstep. It all started going down while we were recording. We’re sitting in this big black bunker of a studio while our phones are exploding with all this terrible news, and we’re sitting there trying to make a record while trying not to lose our minds. I think you can feel the nervous energy in the playing and the vocal delivery which actually makes for a beautiful recording."

'Does Anybody Live Here?' is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more info, please visit leeroystagger.com.

Vancouver Musician Larissa Tandy Releases New Single NO FUN

Singer-songwriter Larissa Tandy pens a love letter to Vancouver on her latest single 'No Fun' out today on all digital streaming platforms. Watch the video here.

’No Fun’ is the 3rd single and video to be released by Larissa Tandy this summer, following 'Drive'  (released on July 23rd) and 'Sirens' (released on May 21st). Larissa wrote the track as an ode to her current hometown, Vancouver, BC, which is widely known as the ’no fun city' in Canada.

"I’d fallen hard for Vancouver, back in 2007, when I came here for a 'few weeks’ vacation," says Larissa. "I made some friends, had some fun, fell in love with someone, and stayed. Ten years later, after a long stint of living and working in Nashville, I was a week away from heading ‘home' to Vancouver. I was lying in bed, phone in hand, and I guess I was trying to reconnect with my life in Vancouver. But everyone seemed to be leaving town. The few good friends I’d made here were either headed to Toronto for the sake of their careers, or moving to BC’s Sunshine Coast where they could still afford to buy a house and start the next phase of their lives as parents. It made me nervous. I had committed myself to a life here - could I still make it work? Could I afford it? I guess I wrote 'No Fun' while trying to process all that, and maybe talk myself off the ledge. And I’m glad I did.”

Larissa Tandy's new single ‘No Fun’ is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more info, please visit larissatandy.com.

UNINTERRUPTED Returns To Downtown Vancouver Aug 17 - 28

UIPRHeader2.jpg

UNINTERRUPTED-VR will be outdoors at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on šxʷƛ̓exən Xwtl’a7shn plaza - August 17th - 28th

“The most amazing 24 minutes I’ve ever spent!” - Stephen Quinn, CBC Early Edition

After wowing audiences with virtual reality (VR) showings across Metro Vancouver this summer, UNINTERRUPTED-VR is returning to downtown Vancouver for a final run August 17th - 28th (dark on August 22nd & 23rd). The free event will be on the plaza next to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, recently named šxʷƛ̓exən Xwtl’a7shn in the languages of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh peoples.

UNINTERRUPTED, the outdoor cinematic spectacle that lit up Vancouver’s Cambie Bridge in the summer of 2017, is now public art on the move, touring in synchronized virtual reality.  No need to own a headset - one will be provided for you. The event is designed so audiences of twenty can be immersed in the experience together, while apart - bringing a little community connection back to local neighborhoods after a long year of pandemic restrictions.

UNINTERRUPTED-VR maps the extraordinary migration of Pacific salmon on a city bridge in a unique visual and sound experience. With visual poetry, it inspires audiences to reflect on the intersection of urban life and nature. It’s the heart of the river delivered to the heart of a city - and now to more cities than ever.

Seeing is believing. Click here to see a video clip of what you’ll find in the goggles.

Coming off at capacity nightly viewings in Vancouver at the Museum of Vancouver and North Vancouver at The Shipyards in July, UNINTERRUPTED-VR moves next to Burnaby - outdoors at the Burnaby Art Gallery (August 3rd - 13th) - where it’s fully booked already. Then it wraps up in downtown Vancouver (August 17th - 28th). TIckets for the final run will open shortly. Each audience member is fitted with a VR headset and seated in a swivel chair in order to enjoy the 360-degree experience. Seating is outdoors, and all equipment is sanitized between showings with ultraviolet light used to clean the sensitive equipment.

The event is free but seats must be booked in advance at uninterrupted.ca and tickets are expected to go quickly. Sign up to be notified at: https://uninterrupted.ca/sign-up-for-notifications.

The UNINTERRUPTED project continues to evolve through the creative collaboration of director Nettie Wild, producers Betsy Carson and Rae Hull, editor Michael Brockington and a diverse team of artists and media specialists. Support for this second Vancouver run is provided by the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association and Vancouver Civic Theatres. A committed network of sponsors has made the summer tour possible, ensuring the event remains free to the public.

We gratefully acknowledge that UNINTERRUPTED was filmed on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie), Hupač́asath and the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band of the Secwepemc Nation.

BC Singer-Songwriter Mark Perry Releases New Single WHO AM I

3rd Single From New Album Northwest
Watch/Share Video
HERE

BC singer-songwriter Mark Perry gets introspective on his new single 'Who Am I' out today on all digital streaming platforms. Watch the video here.

‘Who Am I’ is the 3rd single from Mark Perry’s new album Northwest set for release later this year. The song is a product of the pandemic and asks the existential question of the moment - who am I?

"It's a big question many of us pack around," says Perry. "When what we perceive as 'normal' in life suddenly wavers, we begin to question what ‘normal' ever was. The COVID-19 pandemic tore down many of our perceptions. Our social life became restricted. So many things we enjoyed — a cup of coffee or tea, a beer, a glass of wine with friends — became questionable events. Work places were adjusted to slow down social interaction. We humans stumbled and began to show cracks.

"‘Who Am I’ is about that waltz through despair and self doubt. It's almost a strange dance through depression, anxiety and dementia. We question our perceptions, yet we keep moving onward because we must. It sounds slightly different because of its guitar tuning and chord voicings. The mix of a relatively quick feel and rhythm with a haunting melody, project a subtle sense of optimism."

'Who Am I' follows the release of previous singles 'Fish Boats' (released on June 25th) and 'Golden Spruce' (released on May 21st). The 3 tracks are a part of Perry’s upcoming album Northwest. Written during the COVID-19 pandemic, the songs were among 13 chosen for the album, recorded “COVID long distance” style with Perry’s producer in Whitehorse, Yukon, and musicians recording in their own remote studios across Canada — from Tobin Frank in Victoria, to Mip in Toronto, Andrea McColeman in Whitehorse, and Perry, Mark Thibeault, Kiri Daust, and Ian Olmstead in Smithers, BC.

Like his other albums, Perry draws from his Northern BC surroundings on Northwest. These songs come from, what is to many, an exotic and remote place. They offer a peek at people, landscapes and isolation. It's about people’s emotional connection to landscapes, our dependency on its natural resources, our resilience, especially when we experience loss, and how we find our way out of it.

Mark Perry's new single ‘Who Am I’ is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more info, please visit markperry.ca.
